Today, khurak.net would like to introduce to you RetroArch Tutorial – Easiest Possible Setup. Following along are instructions in the video below:
“Everybody. This is jason carr once again ncoming to you from the unbroken software studio studio and today. We re gonna take a look at retroarch nbut specifically how to up retroarch as quickly and easily as possible nnow. Historically retroarch has been kind of a pain to set up nit has gotten significantly easier lately.
But it s still pretty far from what i would ncall and obvious process that said retroarch is amazing nif you haven t had the chance to use retroarch because you can t get it set up you ve run ninto issues. You just gave up this video is for you ni want to make this video as easy as possible. And i want it to be easy enough for anybody nto be able to follow it and set up retroarch on their machines. Nbecause retroarch has some of the best emulation methods out there for various platforms nand.
It s just really great. Because it helps you to make everything uniform into one spot application. Nthat emulates. A bunch of your platforms.
So if you run emulators on a regular basis nand you have more than one platform. Retroarch is really a must have nso let s get started here the first step. Obviously is just to download nretroarch so we re gonna go into our browser. And just ngoogle for retroarch and the first thing that comes up should be nlibretro.
Which is the home of retroarch and then go to downloads nand welcome to the convoluted process of setting up retroarch already nwe re gonna click stable and then the latest version which in this case is 122 nand. Then we re gonna go down to win x64 assuming you have a 64 bit computer nif. You don t you ll probably wanna choose the win x86 nmost likely. Everyone is gonna have a 64 bit computer at this point nso we ll say win x64 and we re gonna download this retroarch 1227z nfile magically i already have it downloaded here nfor us so we don t have to wait for the download in my downloads folder nnow this is a 7z file not sure why they distribute it as a 7 zip file probably to save space nbut you will need.
7 zip or winrar or something similar in order to extract it nunfortunately windows by default does not extract 7 zip files nso you can download 7 zip from the web pretty easy just google. 7 zip nit doesn t have any ad ware or bloatware or any of that stuff nit s free and open source. You can t go wrong with 7 zip nso go ahead and download and install that if you need to it should be pretty easy nand then you can right click on your retroarch 1227z file and go to 7 zip and extract to retroarch. 122.
Nnow. This will take a minute or two just because there are a lot of tiny little files inside nthat retroarch archive. So we ll just wait for that to. Finish nthere.
You go now you have this retroarch. 122. Folder nand you can move that pretty much anywhere on your hard drive nthough. I will say you don t want to put it in program.
Files nor anywhere that requires administrative access to write to the folder. Nbecause retroarch. Does store configuration files. And such inside its own folder.
Nso. You can move it maybe to the root of your hard. Drive or your user folder or your documents. Nfolder.
But don t move it to program. Files nbut for the sake of this demo. We re just gonna leave it right here in downloads nso. We ll open up the folder and we re gonna go down and look for this nlittle space invader guy the retroarchexe file nand.
We re gonna double click that to open it up nand the first thing. I m gonna do is go to window u003e toggle exclusive fullscreen nand from. Herewe want it fullscreen just because there s no reason not to do emulation nfullscreen. Everybody s gonna wanna see their games fullscreen nso that setting should be remembered so you don t have to go back and forth between fullscreen nand window mode ever again now there s one setting that we need to set nhere initially.
But first what gets everybody hung up when nthey first load up retroarch is nobody has any idea how to navigate nbecause the default keys are weird you would think the enter key would work nbut. It doesn t. But the arrow keys. Do let you navigate the nitems.
But the x key is what acts as enter to go ninto. An item and the z key is what acts as escape nagain the x key acts as enter and the z key acts as escape nso. We re gonna go down to settings here and press x. Nfrom.
There. We re gonna go down to configuration and press x. Nand. Then we re gonna go down to configuration per core and we re gonna press the right narrow key to turn that on now.
What this does is it makes every single n or emulator have a separate configuration nnow that s important obviously because nintendo 64 for example is gonna have a completely ndifferent controller setup. Than say super nintendo or sega genesis nand. Without this setting. You can t have separate settings for every single platform nso.
It becomes really difficult to have uniform settings. That work for all of your emulators nso now that that s set we re gonna press z to go back nand then z again to go back and the only other thing we need to do here nbefore. We move on is to download the core or the emulator nfor the platforms that we want to use so right now we re just gonna start with nsuper nintendo. So we re gonna go to online.
Updater and press. Nx and then core updater and press x nand. We re gonna go down here and pull up the super nintendo core that we re gonna user nhere which is the snes9x next core and i m gonna press x on that nand it goes and downloads. The core for me and then we ll press z to get out and z again.
Nand then we re just gonnna go down to quit retroarch and press x nand. There it is so the first thing. We re gonna note. Here is inside your retroarch folder nyou have a cores folder and inside that you ll.
Notice is the dll file. Nfor the core that we just downloaded the snes9x next libretrodll file nand that s where the cores go that s important for later we ll get into that in a second nthe next thing. We re gonna do is install launchbox and the reason. We re doing that is just because nlaunchbox makes it really easy to be able to launch your games and manage your games.
Nand just be able to do everything from a nice simple interface instead of a. Convoluted one nlaunchbox is available for downloading at launchbox appcom. It s really easy to do nso. I won t get into that process.
But here s the launchbox setup. We ll start nthe setup and we ll click next nand. I accept next next next next next install nokay and it will ask for administrative rights ntowards the end of the process in order to update your directx drivers and such nokay and here s launchbox. So we ll go ahead and nclose out of these windows now something that s really nice about launchbox ni have this series of super nintendo roms here just a few of them nwe are going to drag the zip files.
The rom files over to launchbox nnow. It will pop up this wizard here and it ll say what type of game files are you importing we re importing rom files nand the platform for these rom files is super nintendo nnext and choose an emulator we don t have an emulator nright now because it s a brand new launchbox installation nwe. ll go ahead and click add. And it says snes9x pre populated nokay well we re smarter than that and we re gonna change to a different emulator nwe re gonna change to retroarch and it says we ve auto populated proper settings nfor retroarch.
You shouldn t need to change them nsimply use the link of the left to download the emulator and then click the browse button nso really all we need to do is hit the browse button and go into the downloads folder. Where nwe downloaded retroarch to and find that retroarch exe. File. Nand.
Then you ll notice down here remember how i mention the cores earlier nfor retroarch. We have our snes9x next libretro core nand in our emulator settings. Here you notice under super nintendo. We have that core referenced nright here under command line parameters.
So that s already configured properly for nyou. But if you need to add one that s not in the list nyou want to change the core that s associated with a particular platform nyou can do that right here in this grid. So go ahead and click ok nand then next and we ll use the files in their current location nand. We ll go ahead and search the database for metadata nand.
We want some images. But i m only gonna do the front just to make it quicker here nand. We ll leave those at the defaults and here s the games that it s gonna import nthey all look correct so we ll hit finish and now it s gonna go download metadata and nimages for our 5 games here there it is 5 games were imported successfully nso. We have some nice pretty box art on these games nand.
We should just be able to double click on one of these games and they should just nwork beautifully. So we ll double click on super mario. World nhere and there we have it there s the game running nin retroarch perfectly fine now obviously at this point. We need to set nup some input to make our controller or our keyboard work the way we want to control the ngame so the next to know is f1 f1 on the keyboard nis what gets you out to your retroarch settings.
While you re in a game nand. It also gets you back out to the game so press f1 to get to your settings nand then we re gonna scroll down to settings again nand then we re gonna go to input and press x nnow. I m gonna turn on my 360 controller here and it says xinput controller user 1 configured nin port 0 and then i m gonna go down to user 1 bind nall and press x. Now.
I m just gonna press. The buttons on the ncontroller that it tells you to press. Now one more thing to note with the controls nif. You re doing this for a platform like super nintendo or sega genesis or similar nwhere.
There aren t any analog controls on the standard controller for the platform nyou re gonna want to set the user 1 analog to digital type to left analog nand what that will do is make your left analog stick on your 360 controller or similar controller nwhatever. You ve got work like the d pad on the original controller nassuming you don t use the d pad yourself alright so from here we can press z to back nout and z to back out again and we re gonna go down to save new config nand. Then press x. And you ll notice it saved the config to snes9x next.
Libretro nwhich. Means. This config is only going to be for super nintendo games. Nwhich is perfect for what we need now we ll hit f1 again and we re back out nto our game.
And we can play the game with out controls njust fine. And when we re done playing we can just press nthe escape key to get back out to launchbox. And there you have it nall these games should be working perfectly fine your controls should remain for super nnintendo of course. You can add any number of other nplatforms from the platforms.
List you can add additional platforms to retroarch nquickly and easily this way and hopefully this gets you up and running nand. You don t have any problems.
