Lets get to it tech in focus maria bartiromo sat down exclusively with oracle oracle co founder and executive chairman larry ellison for an interview. We start with his on the future of the tech industry and how oracle continues to beat back the competition. Mike larry.
Let me turn you youre a states nan. The industry madustry manustry man. Itry man inry man in t.
Man in theindustry. Youve watched small companies become big companies what strikes you most about what youve seen over the last several years again sometimes. I likeen the computer industry to the fashion industry that certain brands get very popular certain brands get unpopular ibm when i came into the industry was the ultimate brand.
It was not a company against whom you would compete amazon now is kind of the number one brand in infrastructure. Cloud computing. Let me tell you an interesting.
Fact amazon does not views aws to run their business amazon runs their entire business on top of oracle on top of the oracle database. They have been unable to migrate to aws because its not good enough now i keep saying this and they just spent another 50 million with us last year. Buying more oracle database.
I keep saying this saying. Maybe our database is better than amazons database sis. Why else would amazon keep buying our database.
They last year. Bravely said theyre sick of these comments of mine and theyre going to move off of oracle and theyre going to move off of oracle by 2020. Guess what they just moved a bunch of their warehouses off of oracle and guess what happened ill send you a copy of amazons internal memo.
They went down it hailed. They had a huge outage. They said if they stayed with oracle this wouldnt have happened the oracle database manages most of the worlds data today 10 years ago.
Nothing has changed all of the worlds important valuable data is in an oracle database. Theyre not in amazons database amazon wont use its own databases to run its business so our job what have we done wrong if you guys are so great your database is so great. What did you do wrong we didnt.
Get our database to the cloud quickly enough. If you wanted a cloud database. You had to go to amazon for a database.
And you were able to go to microsoft for a database. It took a while for us to build a secure cloud. Its really hard to build a secure cloud.
It took us a while we think were there now we have by far and away the best database in the world. Nothings close. We show a series of benchmarks where were 10 times faster than amazon.
Were 10 times cheaper to run the same exact thing than amazon on our database. So if you want all that security and want all that reliability you have to be willing to spend less thats what weve shown in the series of benchmarks. Even amazon cant move mike.
Thats incredible tke thats incredible. The thats incredible they thats incredible theyrehats incredible. Theyre tts incredible.
Theyre trys incredible.
Theyre tryinincredible. Theyre tryingncredible. Theyre trying tredible theyre trying toedible theyre trying to gible theyre trying to getle theyre trying to get a theyre trying to get at your market share in one area and yet theyre on your database platform.
People say. Oracle has no chance in database. Amazon will dominate everything you think one of the early customers of amazon would move how about amazon amazon picked oracle.
How do you keep that leading position well we think we have i dont know 10 to 20 year lead on amazon in database is let me prove it another thing amazon uses oracle can not amazon the transaction processing database they have is called aurora aurora is an open source database they picked up and made closed source on amazon. They didnt write any of that they picked up arecord say put it on amazon made it available on their cloud. Who owns aurora who develops aurora that would be oracle.
Its called my sequel. Its our small open source database which they claim is their transaction processing database that will replace oracle its just preposterous that amazon didnt even develop the amazon database. Its just a chunk of open source that we are responsible for called my sequel my sequel does not compare with the oracle database.
Theres a reason amazon uses oracle you know who else uses oracle another company that hates us sap uses oracle everywhere sap10 years ago said i hate oracle. Im getting off of oracle. I cant stand these guys especially the guy that goes on tv and makes fun of us because we have this great new database called hannah.
They say. Its awesome well they have all of these cloud services. They have success factors does it run on hannah.
No it runs on oracle. They all run on oracle 95. 98.
Of everything sap does runs on oracle. Its decades later they still use oracle cant get to hannah the oracle database beat ibm in the database. The data bse the data business beat microsoft in the database sis.
Weve beenve been de been datbeen databen databasebusiness. Its the worlds first autonomous system. All of saps large customers.
The eu did a study what percentage of the top 100 sap customers in europe. How many run the oracle database. Only 99 one actually ran ibm db2.
We only have 99 of 100 all of their cloud services. Whether its success factors aariba. Theyve been trying to get on hannah for a decade.
They still run oracle. The reason is oracle is a better database than anyone else has satja nadellha was asked if i could have any piece of software in the world. What would it be he said the oracle database.
Because its the information age. does funeral. I missed.
But also my friends and family you dont go through something like addiction. Without hurting the people who love you most when i was actively in addiction. I would sometimes stay with my sister and shed come up to my room to invite me to breakfast and often i wouldnt be there.
Because id still be out drinking taking drugs partying with strangers whatever so i was then a year sober when i moved in with her and for the first few.
Days she came up at 5 am and push the door open just to check that i was still in bed. Because she was so afraid that i would have relapsed and gone out on a bender. Its that kind of fear anxiety and pain that we have to make amends for so thats what i did some people accepted my apologies and were so overwhelmingly gracious and i just was blown away by their responses.
It was spectacular other people didnt reply at all and some people just werent ready to hear from me and thats fine. It is not about the reactions you get from other people. Its the fact that i was cleaning my side of the street that i had the humility to make those amends meant that i was becoming the kind of person that i wanted to be so steps.
10 and 11 continue to take personal inventory. And when we were wrong promptly admitted him sort through prayer and meditation to approve improve our conscious contact with god as we understood him praying only for knowledge of his will for us and for the power to carry that out so im out check in every day. I will look at what ive done that week.
I will make amends promptly when ive been wrong. Which is a lot easier than years later and also i take time for myself i pray i meditate. I reflect ive learnt to do things to love myself.
I moisturize every day now and im so pleased that i get the opportunity to do that step. 12 last of the steps having had a spiritual awakening. It was a result of these steps.
We try to carry this message to alcoholics or addicts and to practice these principles in all our affairs. So the spiritual awakening. Theyre talking about anyone whos worked through these twelve steps will tell you that theres something superhuman about it you just cant you cant explain the way it changes peoples lives.
It is like nothing ive ever seen and with that in mind and having experienced. It and had that amazing opportunity to experience it for myself a year and a half ago. I set up a recovery course for people who are struggling with all kinds of addiction.
Its based from west london. Its a 16 week program based on these 12 steps. I didnt write it i just facilitate.
Its actually run by an amazing charity called recovery and seeing people walk in the door coming from the same place of desperation that i remember so clearly seeing them really desperate really struggling and then seeing them transform into some of the most inspirational people. I know who then walk other people through that journey is the proudest thing ive ever done it is both the hardest. But most rewarding thing in my life.
Theres no doubt in my mind that having done this program. Having worked through these steps. Im a better person that i would have been possibly had i never even struggled with addiction at all.
But you guys dont need to hit rock bottom or get. A black eye or do anything crazy to start incorporating these kind of principles in your life. You can admit that youre not completely in control that youre not the higher power.
You can take stock of where life has brought you and talk to somebody about it honestly you can identify character defects and you can work on them you can apologize when youve been wronged you can take time to pray to meditate and you can go out there and help other people and you will be happier. More fulfilled people. If you do that and i would so encourage you to and one final point and definitely the most important thing that im going to say through this whole talk.
If you relate to what ive just described of my journey. If you think that you may be struggling with any kind of addiction whether that be booze drugs gambling sex porn compulsive skin picking shopping food. I say food love codependency anything then you have to do something about it.
Its okay. If you havent been able to sort this out on your own. I couldnt either you know and no one actually that i know in recovery was able to were not built that way we cant deal with this stuff.
Its too big to do it on her own.
But there are people up and down the country there are charities. There are anonymous groups there are support groups. There are churches who want to help you and all you have to do is help yourself google them reach out to them and connect with them and they will support you in that journey.
These things may or may not kill you but they will stop you living and your life is too important you are too precious to accept anything other than complete freedom thank you applause music. question of course. But you know youre gonna stop an active bully active bleed before we go you know really check their vital signs.
Yeah. You know put pressure on the loot so definitely theres going down that list those three principles that you have first abcs yep. Second maslows third ad.
Buy yep. Yeah. Right absolutely all right maslows.
I would say maslows with that physiological need is really part of that is really part of that. Yeah. Yeah.
Does that make sense. I think that was good and then like i said. The last thing that i wanted to say about case scenario.
Questions. Or scenario. Questions is you have to read the full question.
Read the full question before you go into anything else because often times. There might be some nuances in the question do you miss make sure that you understand the question fully before you answer or something at the very end. Im not sure if they do this for you guys.
But i know for one of the certifications. I took a long time ago. They said read the full question because they they might throw something in at the very end like its a whole giant.
Paragraph and at the end. It says by the way blah blah blah. And it changes.
The whole thing right so. Im not sure if that it happens to that extent. But for sure.
But yeah definitely read the whole question and make sure that you understand it all and that all that you understand all that information. Most often times. What ive seen is they give you like a whole paragraph and then theres like you know.
Its just its a super basic question at the end that like really almost has nothing to do with all the other information that they gave you yeah. You know. That was that was a lot in one of.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
So just make sure to read everything.
There. Is one. Other thing that i know that ive heard you saying about it as well um.
When doing the test to it what was it it was on the tip of my tongue hmm. What was it youll remember my wednesday. Yeah thatll be great uh.
Yeah. Ill just start off the live. Like by the way.
Did. You know did you know um oh. No thats what it was uh on a see i remember before on on exams and things you want to um.
Its a perfect environment right except except for whats in the question right so you can expand on that. But i think that thats part of it too nursing exams are a perfect world thats what youre required yes that is what im referring to yes nursing exams are a perfect world so of course like you have to you have to prioritize of course. But when youre taking especially case scenario questions like you just have to forget all of your past experience out in clinical as a cna as a tech as an lpn.
What have you any of your experience you got to get rid of it because nclex world is a perfect world you have unlimited time you have unlimited resources you have a whole team of nurses right in that room with you its a perfect world. So just to make sure that when youre. Answering task questions.
You are answering them textbook textbook. Perfect. Textbook.
Perfect. Not real. World.
Anything. Yeah textbook perfect yes. Thats a good point.
Thats funny uh chastity. Um. Oh omg so many times i pick what you should do when its asking you what not to do yes.
The big thing about reading the question read the question because it will they will switch it they will switch it up theyll say now what should you not do yeah. So make sure that you read the question absolutely all right well guys. We have a conference going on virtually thanks for joining us.
So we are going to head out. Yeah. Thanks for joining us for this abridged.
