“Honestly camper here today. I ve got my 300 watt best tech power inverter that that claims to be a full sine power inverter and i wanted to test it started off running a couple tests just to see what it could do and i thought i think i ll hook by its little scope up and see if this is actually a full sine power inverter. So what i would expect to see when i turn it on and look at the scope is a nice smooth sandy soil signal. So let s try that turn on so took about a second to come on and it is indeed a full sine power inverter for about 40 bucks pretty good deal my rms power or my rms voltage root mean square voltage is 112 volts that s similar to what you would see if you took a voltage meter and stuck it on the outlet in your house.
And it s coming in right. At 60 hertz. So indeed. It is a very clean power inverter nice nice source of output power for about 40 bucks.
The downside is it s only 300 watts with a 400 watt surge that s enough to run a lot of things. But you re not going to run heavier appliances off of it so for comparison. Let s see what i will refer to as the cheap ass power inverter does take a look at its. Signal so now i have my relatively inexpensive 1800 175 watt modified sine inverter connected and we power it on take a look at its signal.
See what it looks like and whoa. You can definitely see that is not a full sine signal that looks more like a square wave. And my arm s. Still comes out in 113 volts.
So that s fine coming in at about..
Sixty one and a half hertz somewhere around there 613. So the frequencies on close enough and the rms is fine. But as you can see we have a modified waveform here it is not a sinusoidal waveform. So it does not mimic your household current.
The cost difference between these two inverters is about twenty five dollars. So it s not huge and i would probably go with a full sign if 300 watts is going to be enough. But as you get into larger inverters you could pay twice as much for a full side. As you do for a modified sign now in many cases in most cases.
Your appliances will run just fine on modified sign. But there are some some situations such as running a microprocessor controlled electric blanket which i do or if you re going to use an hp laptop a lot of them carry a warning against using inverters and they re talking about these modified sign inverters. So as a rule of thumb. You can always use the full sign inverter on anything modified sign inverters you really want to consult the manufacturer s documentation and see if there are any restrictions on it i ve run.
Very expensive tvs using modified sign and you get a little bit extra noise out of the power converter. But they didn t cause any harm at all. But then i ve heard horror stories about people blowing up adapters especially on hp computers. So read your manufacturer s warranty.
Read the booklet and make sure that choosing the right inverter..
So another question that comes up all the time is what s the relative efficiency between the different types of inverters now. I don t have two inverters that are exactly the same size. So they re if you re running a larger inverter and me draw a little bit more power. But just out of curiosity.
I m gonna see what the current driver is running a hundred watt light bulb on both of these inverters. So i ll measure the current out of the battery. We know it s producing 110 volts out of the inverter and i ll see how much current it takes out of the battery and that ll give us an idea of the relative efficiency between the two so now i ve got my m meter. Hooked up to measure the current that the battery is putting out or i should say the current that the inverter is drawing.
I know i said i would get a hundred watt bulb. But actually all i could find was a 60 watt seems. I ran out a hundred watt bulbs a while ago and they don t sell them anymore so i ve got my 60 watt ready to go now just looking at the draw with this inverter on i see that i ve got almost two tenths of an ampere a little more than two tenths of an amp. So 200 milliamps and that s just a title now when i put a load on this you ll hear you ll hear the low voltage alarm squeal just because the battery is getting a little low on voltage that shouldn t affect this measurement at all so i turn this on and i can see that i m.
Pulling. 55. Amps out of the inverter to light. The 60 watt bulb.
And it s pretty stable there all right so..
Now let s see what the full sign does 56. It looks like is where we leveled off to run a 60 watt light bulb. So now i have my best tech inverter set up go ahead and turn it on stabilized. And it looks like i m pulling point.
6 amps of 600 billions. It s almost triple what it was with modified sine inverter and that s just at idle. It s not there s nothing on there s no drain on it so now let s turn on our 60 watt. Bulb let s see what happens well we jump up to.
61. Amps so it s. Pulling 61. Amps.
Out of the battery. So it s taking more power to run this 60 watt load. Than the modified sine is i don t know what the conventional wisdom is on power inverters. Whether or not they are more efficient.
If they re full sine or less efficient or what the arguments on the other side are so on the output side full sine vs modified..
But i can tell you that just running this simple test the full sine inverter definitely draws more power out of your battery take it for what it s worth. But what i m saying is for comparable inverters modified versus full side the full site is definitely drawing more current than the modified side it s not a huge amount of difference. But there is a difference.
