“Folks today. We are going to go through installing an engine block heater on a a pickup truck now the particular. Truck i m using is a 1997 f250 heavy with the 58. Liter.
3. 51. Gas. Engine.
This will be the exact same procedure for any of these square. Body style f250 f350. The 150 will be really similar maybe not exact as far as you know your access through the frame. And that kind of thing.
But it should be the the basics are all going to be the same because all these freeze plug block heaters install the same way all right so. The first thing you re going to do is drain your coolant. I pull the lower radiator hose off made a pretty good mess. When i did it there s and i ll drain the coolant however you want to drain.
It just get as much as you can and even then don t be surprised. If we get a little more out later this is the heater. It s a zero start brand. This is actually a really good brand.
Really well known they make a lot of heaters for oms. I know john deere uses their products from the. Factory that s the part number for this truck for the 58. Liter engine.
I believe it s the same for the five four. But i ll double check that and i ll put links to this down in the description. So you can see it and then we re going to come down here. I m in the passenger wheel well and we re going to look right back.
There this camera in here. And you can see right there s our starter right there and right there if you look under the manifold that s the freeze plug this heater installed in so when we knock that plug out expect more coolant to come out because even though you ve drained the radiator you ve drained. Most of the block. There s a good chance they re still going to be a little bit left.
In there. So have a drain pan. Be ready for that let me get some stuff set up and we ll knock the plug out and get going. There s a little more coolant coming out the way you remove these freeze plugs is by knocking them inward.
Like i did this there then grab it with a pair of pliers and pull it out. And i may need to tap a little bit more it looks like you could get into the truck and do this. But i m i ve got along far. I m trying to do as much as i can from right here right here under the wheel well just because of what you can see it makes a pretty good mess.
Even though i ve already drained it their way it was left in the block. I might even ask for with relief the next thing you want to do is clean around this hole clean this whole as well as you can because that block either seals with just uh just a little over in seal. I went in there. I have blushed it up a little bit.
I had a wire brush on the dremel and now we are ready to slide the heater into the hole in the block you can see this is the heater right here on hold. It by the element and the way. It works is that go ring seals against the inside of that plug hole and that s what keeps it from leaking. If you read the instructions they tell you to lubricate this o ring.
Before you put it in do not use grease do not use oil. Any petroleum based products will cause this o ring to break down you want to use either a water based lube account or dish soap or they say in the instructions you can even use antifreeze. But i don t really like that i want something a little thicker so i hit mine with just a light coat of dish soap and then your what you do is you put the plug in the hole. And there s this little screw you tighten that screw and when you tighten that screw it pulls the flat piece there at the wide part of the triangle forward and expands.
Those two ears. And that s what locks the block heater in the hole. So let s do that there it is alright. There it is in there now once it s not in there well it s just barely hanging.
I ll have to snug it up better in a second. But it won t explain the instructions tell you to make sure when you put it in the element. Is pointed off its pointed to the 12 o clock position. It s pointed towards the head on the engine.
You don t want it at an angle. You don t want where it could accident with contact part of the block. Because that would cause it to short out so make sure when you put it in you have the element pointed up now in the direction. That they tell you to tighten that screw to 25 inch pounds so if you have an inch pound torque wrench you definitely want to do that but once you get tight.
We re gonna make a plan for where you re going to run them to run your power cable make sure if you re going to feed it in and plug it in first then feed it up to the front. You ve got room to get the plug all the way up through the front. The cable is about four feet long. It s a pretty good size.
So you should have plenty of cable to get where you re going just make sure the if you re going to start back here make sure the mail into that plug that plugs into your extension cord is going to fit through everywhere you want to run it there s plug height. I don t like that over there and so mmm the site is that is air. We own our plugged in what the cell now when you re running your power cable make sure it s routed away from your exhaust manifold and anything that can get hot or any moving parts like the fan fan belt or any of the pulley and then just secure. It with some zip ties.
Now while you have the block drained. If you haven t changed your coolant lately. This is an excellent time to replace your cooler and take a garden hose flush your block out really really well while you ve got this access just so that anything any big rust particles or anything like that that may be in there you can get them get them pushed out get them cleaned up because that kind of stuff can be really hard to get out and having this extra access it s just just going to make it a little bit easier. I m not doing that because i just did it a few months ago.
And i m actually going to be pulling the engine out of this truck here maybe in may or june. When the ” ..
