Based based in durham. North. Carolina. Today.
I m going to walk you through the five facial. Any patterns for portrait photography check it importunate ography one of the things that you need to take into consideration is the quality of light in the direction of life my quality of light. I mean is a contrasting or is it dreamy soft and eerie. So those things in order to achieve those things you have to understand the direction of light is it coming from very up high above slightly below.
How are the shadows. Hardly shadow transfers is a very harsh or if it s smooth again quality and direction of light. Now today. I want to demonstrate five different facial lighting patterns for portrait photography.
A reason why i want to do this is so you can understand how using one leg. You can create different moods different looks and feel in your portraits. So the first facial lighting pattern is called butterfly are paramount lighting pretty much is where you have your main lighter he like in front of your model at a 45 degree angle pointing towards the model pretty much how that works is will create a nice shadows underneath your models nose and a little bit underneath the chin depending on how elevated or high up. You have your light.
And if you don t have any respect from the bullet for our second facial light pattern. We have what we called loop lighting and how it works is i still have my light for you on my model at a 45 degree angle. But i m moving it towards your my camera right your camera left you re going to start seeing little shadows on the models notes opposite to where the lady. The light is falling our third facial light pattern is called rembrandt.
So i m still moving to my camera right and now. I m going to be creating a lot more drama still keeping that light at a 45 degree angle. Controlling how light falls because you really want to pay attention to the direction of the light again quality and direction so now you re going to be seen and inverted triangle on your models opposite side to where the light is hitting this creates a lot more drama and a lot more contrast now for our fourth facial light pattern. We have side lighting and that pretty much is self explanatory.
You have one light one side that is full of life than the other one it s oh sure our fifth light pattern is hair light or ring light or back 45. So pretty much what i m doing is i m not really illuminating the face at this point. What i m doing is i m silhouetting the body contouring. It and creating a separation between my background.
And my model well guys. I hope you found that helpful and remember you really don t need a ton of lights to create different moods and looks and feels in your photography. The important thing is to really understand how light works and have fun with it so please don t forget to subscribe to behind the lens. So that i can get more indian from you guys comments for more ” .
