“Do we make local scalable. How do we make local scalable. So that as mr. Mr.
Pierre said. We can exercise our self determination. I feel so insignificant sometimes still vote. I act i push so many people though and myself oftentimes included feel so small and we don t vote.
We don t act. We don t push. We don t feel like we matter. We re not big enough.
And that makes sense because the last 100 years of history have been about building economic systems to support an exploding population from one and a half billion people to six and a half billion people we need a lot of scale to feed all of us to clothe all of us to take care of all of us. But as scale grows so too does its shadow and more of us are left in the dark and in that darkness. There s a creeping nihilism. Because we feel like we don t matter.
We re overwhelmed and we feel like because we are out of control. We don t have responsibility and the data would almost bear that out let me just run you through a few things the more red. The worse. Our food system is controlled almost entirely by about 20 companies or so our health care system 60 of americans two hundred million people are covered by the same ten health care plans five banks control six point eight trillion dollars of our assets.
That s forty five percent. That s more than a third of our gdp in government over two thirds of the money that goes into political campaigns..
Is contributed by less than one third of 1 of all americans scale is all around us. It s too big to fail. And so it s the corollary of that too big to fail. That s most frightening to me too big to fail by definition means that smaller entities can t compete and we re killing.
Biodiversity literally in the last 100 years. We ve gone from 1 billion of us to six and a half billion of us and in that same timeframe we ve seen 954 species go extinct and this killing of biodiversity. Economically means that fewer of us have the means for ownership for production for competition how many of us have 25000. In cash and a couple years of down time.
Where we can work for free to start our own business to go out and compete to build something for ourselves that we feel ownership and responsibility because that s the bare minimum that defines the means of production. Some. But very few have those means and even if we do have those means. How do we compete.
If i m a farmer and monsanto controls. 85 percent of the agricultural system. How do i compete. How does our business compete with walmart or with cisco.
How do we compete. So it makes sense to me that we re scared that we don t matter. I m scared that i don t have enough that i m not significant enough that there s not going to be enough left for me. How do we make local scalable.
So that we each feel like we matter. More and that we have responsibility and control over what s happening around us..
How do we make local scalable. So more people have more opportunity more access to wealth to the means of production to competition. How do we make local scalable. So that wealth is distributed in a way that s healthier and more just and less destabilizing to our humanity.
How do we make local scalable. So that we each matter a little bit more well to beat scale. We need to accomplish scale our enterprise union kitchen at a very high level is an effort to provide a free market solution to the more equitable distribution of wealth. It s never to use scale to diffuse not consolidate to diffuse wealth and opportunity.
We re a business incubator for food businesses with over 100 member businesses. We strive to accomplish a collective scale and a market force that can make local scalable make each of us matter. More make each of us more responsible our belief is that there are two interrelated problems driving the yawning inequities that we not the government not waiting on other people. But that we can address everyday.
The first is the means of production. We can control means of production and put them in the hands of more people so that more people have access to opportunity to competition to responsibilities right now making something locally and getting it to scale is nearly impossible how could you compete with the five companies that control whatever industry. It is that you want to go into and so the second problem is that this exclusion from competition creates a compounding lack of competition. And it s that compounding that is terrifying.
It means that we are all mattering less at a faster rate every day. We all matter less at a faster rate every day our nihilism is becoming an unstoppable force and that nihilism is destructive. Because if i don t matter. Then i don t have any responsibility and the combination of no responsibility.
Because i m too small and the fear that there isn t going to be enough. Because there are so many leads to run away greed and that greed leads to consolidation of power and consolidation of resources..
And it means that less have more and a lot more of us have less but a union kitchen. We re trying to provide solutions. We re providing access to production and we re honing businesses. So they can get to scale to do this we ve had to build our own food system we have over 23000.
Square feet of production space we operate a distribution company a catering company at a pha and a grocery store. We ve built a food system. So that we can take the means of production and put it into the hands of more to make us all matter. A little more to put responsibility back on me and to foster competition.
We built a system where our members can make it move it and sell it through union kitchen. They can make it in our space. They can move it on our trucks. They can sell it at our stores.
We ve lowered the barrier to the means of production while simultaneously making our businesses more competitive by driving cash into their businesses. Through the collective scale and the market force that our model accomplishes and it s working more than 20 storefronts have opened around dc. We have hundreds of products and hundreds of stores hundreds of miles away from here. We ve created over 400 jobs worked with over 150 businesses generate over 40 million dollars in revenues.
And i hope cultivated a model that will spur the same opportunities elsewhere. We are making local scalable. We are putting local food on local shelves and by making. Local scalable union.
Kitchen makes all sorts of people feel like they matter. More and when we feel like we matter more that we were more significant that we have more influence..
We act. We do our part we take responsibility the two mantras of our business are build the community you want to live in and create contributors prosper. Our mantras are about personal responsibility being the foundation of collective action. So let me leave you with a couple parting thoughts.
Our country is so diverse. That there isn t much that naturally binds us together freedom is a common element. But by its nature freedom. Individuality is in conflict with collective action.
Our true collective voice in america is spending and i ve showed you where that money is going our collective voice is running the opposite direction of each of us mattering. More of each of us taking personal responsibility. So how do we make local scalable. What is my responsibility in doing that well i got to put my money where my mouth is i have to spend intentionally i have to contribute to campaigns.
I have to hold government accountable for the taxes they collect i have to hold companies accountable for the cash they take from me. And most importantly. I have to be responsible for the wealth that i accumulate am. I hoarding money or creating waste.
Because i m afraid of being insignificant or that i don t matter enough or there isn t enough to go around am. I being responsible the means of production and competition are ours to control if we take responsibility. I think union kitchen is proving that to be true we are taking is our responsibility to lead from the front and to try to answer that question of how do we make local scalable everyday. And what s my responsibility how do i matter more so i urge you to think about how you matter because you do build the community you want to live in create contribute prosper thank you ” .
